Location intelligence specialist Targomo helps Leipzig’s Health Department to easily schedule multiple home visits to check whether people are in good health and comply with COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Targomo had earlier supported the city of Valencia to contain the pandemic.

Like many other municipalities dealing with the pandemic, the German city of just over 600,000 citizens is focused on reducing the number of coronavirus infections. People with symptoms or a positive test result need to quarantine at home to minimize the risks of spreading the disease.

To check whether these people remain at home and have not seriously fallen ill, staff of the Leipzig health department carry out hundreds of visits each week. The authority turned to Targomo to help build a fast and reliable routing tool to send employees (up to 15 teams per day) to people’s homes. Leipzig relies on Targomo’s Fleet API service to make this possible.

Efficient allocation of staff

“By using the Targomo Fleet API as part of Leipzig’s geo data infrastructure, we enable the Leipzig Health Department to conduct more efficient tours for quarantine inspections,” said Charlie Liebscher, a geo data manager of Leipzig’s Office for Geo Information and Land Use Planning.

Targomo’s technology allows the Health Department to find the optimal routes for the different teams. Thanks to the service, Leipzig is able to keep traveling costs and travel time as low as possible, and guarantee an efficient allocation of staff.  Employees can choose from two travel modes: bike and car. This allows Leipzig’s Health Department to customize its work and remain flexible during the pandemic.

Leipzig is the second municipality that picked Targomo’s services to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. In spring, the Spanish city of Valencia turned to Targomo to build an easy-to-use app, which its citizens could use to comply with lockdown restrictions. The Valencia tool shows inhabitants how far they can move from their homes, and follow regulations to limit their movements in the city.

E-Bikes Added as Travel Mode to Enhance Location Analytics

E-biking has gone mainstream, making it crucial to include it in location analyses. Picture source: Wolfram Bolte on Unsplash.

Targomo’s location analytics platform now includes e-bikes as a travel mode to improve the analysis of catchment areas. It enables businesses to better estimate the potential customer base and reach of their locations.

With the rise of electric bicycles used by people and businesses, the inclusion of this transportation mode has become essential to calculate the catchment area of a location. According to one study, an e-biker on average travels more than 60% faster than a conventional biker: 23 km/h vs. 14 km/h (14 mph vs. 8.7 mph).1 This means that the potential customer base of a location could be up to twice as large, depending on the population density.

In Germany, the annual sales of e-bikes jumped to 1.36 million bikes in 2019 from 535,000 in 2015. A third of all bikes sold in 2019 were e-bikes. In the European Union, total unit sales broke the 3 million mark for the first time in 2019, with e-bikes accounting for 17 percent of total bike sales. Even in the car-focused United States, growth rates are in the double digits.2

In addition to more people buying e-bikes, many bike-sharing companies have started offering electric-powered bicycles. Businesses, such as meal delivery companies and logistics firms, have also started using e-bikes and electric-powered cargo bikes as a fast alternative to cars in traffic jammed cities.

Change the bike speed to use e-bikes as a travel mode in Targomo's location analytics platform TargomoLOOP.
In Targomo’s location analytics platform, users can pick the e-bike mode by increasing the cycling speed with the drop-down menu.

E-bikes: Speeding up

Due to increased usage of electric bicycles, Targomo has added e-biking as a travel mode to its location analytics platform, in addition to walking, normal biking, driving and public transportation. In Targomo’s location analytics platform TargomoLOOP users can customize cycling speeds, choosing between normal biking (15 kilometers/hour or 9 miles/hour) and e-biking (20 or 25 km/h, 12 or 16 miles/h). The platform enables users to calculate the catchment area of locations with demographic, movement and points-of-interest (POI) data.

Many businesses and organizations, from retailers to restaurants and bakeries, from real estate to mobility and public services, can benefit from TargomoLOOP. They can make detailed analyses of locations, catchment areas, and neighborhood characteristics. The inclusion of e-bikes as a travel mode greatly improves these analyses.

The basic version of TargomoLOOP is free of charge and allows users to quickly gain insights into their locations. Curious to see the platform in action? Simply sign up and start analyzing.

About TargomoLOOP

Location analytics platform TargomoLOOP supports managers in retail, real estate, public services and logistics to analyze locations and quickly see their potential in terms of catchment area, customer base and reachability. The platform offers essential features to analyze locations with maps, demographics, and Points of Interest. Users can easily rank locations by category and correlate location variables with performance. They can analyze an unlimited number of locations and download reports of their findings. No set-up is required: Simply register, type in an address, and get results within seconds. Everyone can start analyzing for free.

How Location Analytics Supports Retailers During and After the Pandemic

Dec 14 2020 Published by under Blog

Targomo's location analytics platform helps retailers adapt to changing circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Retailers can gain new insights into their locations, helping them stay agile during the pandemic.

The pandemic poses many challenges to retailers. New regulations come into force overnight and customers’ priorities can change instantly. Location analytics helps adapt to these changing conditions.

While shopping streets have lost a lot of their appeal during the pandemic, local stores have become far more popular. The move to online and omnichannel shopping has intensified due to lockdown restrictions. Home delivery of products and click & collect options have become even more important. To better cope with these short-term developments and its long-term implications, rapid analyses and strategy adjustments are more important than ever. The reachability of a shop or shopping center plays an essential role here.

For many retailers, points of sale are still their main and most important asset to reach customers. Where can retailers best serve their target groups? How many customers can reach a store within 10, 20 or 30 minutes on foot or by car? Where would a Click & Collect service make sense?

Location analytics help retailers answer these questions quickly. By combining data on demographics, household income, Limbic© consumer profiles, and points of interest with a sophisticated reachability analysis, location analytics gives detailed, data-based insights about a location’s catchment area and its potential customer base.

Gain insights quickly

“During the pandemic, it is more important than ever to keep a close eye on individual points of sale and the branch network,” says Noel Carbo, Product Manager with Targomo. “Location analytics enables retailers to gain insights quickly so they can respond to new regulations and market conditions.”

Targomo offers an easy-to-use location analytics platform, TargomoLOOP. The platform helps answer several questions that have become very relevant due to the pandemic:

  • What types of consumers live in the vicinity of a location and are more likely to visit a local in times of home office and low mobility?
  • How many households can be reached in half an hour from a location when launching home delivery by bike or car?
  • Which locations would be suitable as click & collect points?
  • Which stores could be (temporarily) closed without creating gaps in the network?
  • When there are multiple real estate options for expansion, but there’s no possibility to visit every site in person, which locations have the most potential in terms of customer reach?
  • Which points of sale could be redeveloped into multi-use properties, for example combining retail, office and residential options?

Let’s take Click & Collect as an example: Location analytics helps to identify the stores with the biggest reach among the population or target groups. By looking at how many people can reach a point of sale in, for instance, 15 minutes by bike, a retailer can see which locations attract the biggest number of people. Shortlisting of locations based on the reach among the population or a specific target group is easy and quick in TargomoLOOP thanks to a ranking feature.

The basic version of TargomoLOOP is free of charge and allows users to quickly gain insights into their points of sale. A premium plan, called Pro, gives companies access to more data and analysis options, such as white spot analysis, household income statistics, and total purchasing power data. Furthermore, Targomo’s premium Enterprise solution uses the full potential of AI and Machine Learning techniques to calculate the sales potential of (new) locations, cannibalization effects and assortment optimization.

Customers such as German beverage retailer Getränke Hoffmann, Oxford Retail Consultants from the UK and French telecoms company Orange already rely on Targomo’s location intelligence solutions.

Find the Best Locations and Success Factors with Targomo’s Expanded Location Analytics Platform

Dec 04 2020 Published by under Blog

Targomo's location analytics platform now includes easy ranking and correlations tools.
The ranking feature makes it easy to pick the locations that score best on those variables, which are important for the user’s business.

Targomo has added two features – location ranking and correlation analysis – to its location analytics platform TargomoLOOP, making it easy to shortlist the best locations and find likely success factors. Furthermore, users can access more data and analytics options with a new pro plan.

The ranking feature helps users to quickly shortlist the best locations for a new branch or business. An overview of a dozen locations and their ranking is available in seconds. It shows how well a location over- or underperforms compared to the average values of locations for the selected variables and which ranking it has in the network. This makes it easier to pick the location that scores best on criteria relevant for the business.

The second addition, correlation analysis, allows users to find potential success factors for their locations. The feature shows how location variables, such as household size or income groups, relate to performance indicators, such as revenue. With the help of a plot chart, all locations are mapped on a graphic to see how, for instance, a certain age group correlates with revenue. That age group could be a critical factor for performance.

“We are constantly improving our location analytics platform to generate new insights for our users,” says Patrick Schoenemann, Targomo’s CEO. “Retailers and real estate managers often have to search through dozens of locations to find the best one for their business. Shortlisting them with our ranking tool is now easy and fast, leaving more time to analyze the most valuable sites. Correlation analysis will further ease the goal of picking a new location, by revealing factors that relate to success.”

More Data and Analytics Options

In addition to the new features which are available in the free version of TargomoLOOP, users can access more data and analytics options with premium plans. ‘TargomoLOOP Pro’ enables businesses to optimize their network of branches by analyzing white spots, competitor networks, clustering effects, and potential click & collect points as part of an omnichannel strategy. Additional data includes household income statistics, total spending power and movement data that makes it possible to target specific groups and areas with high foot traffic. Users can easily upgrade to the new Pro plan within the platform.

Businesses with a large number of branches and the need for even more advanced analytics can select Targomo’s enterprise solution. This plan offers customized services, such as revenue prediction, cannibalization analysis and assortment optimization. Advanced analytics leverages the full potential of artificial intelligence, big data and machine learning techniques to optimize a large network of branches.

Movement Data to Find and Compare Highly Frequented Areas

Jul 31 2020 Published by under Blog

For the successful performance of shops, supermarkets, restaurants and public services it is essential to know how many people could potentially visit your location. Anonymous movement data makes it possible to see how many people frequent a specific location or area, and predict the potential customer base.

Movement data in TargomoLOOP allows businesses to see how popular location are and compare them to one another.
The redder the area, the more people visit that location for at least 15 minutes. Figures measured from Monday through Sunday, 08:00 am to 08:00 pm.

Based on actual measurements of people who spend at least 15 minutes at a certain location on a given day, Targomo’s location intelligence platform TargomoLOOP now offers such movement figures, which are an indication of footfall. This data comes in addition to many other figures available on the platform, such as population statistics, income groups and consumer types. LOOP stands for LOcation Optimization Platform.

Let’s examine some movement figures for a hotspot in Berlin: Alexanderplatz, or Alexander Square. From 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, every day an average of 32,901 people are within a 10-minute walking distance of Alexanderplatz. The square is home to dozens of stores, including a large shopping mall and department store, and it is a major transfer hub for commuters, who arrive by train, metro, tram and bus. The figure does not reflect the number of travelers or passers-by in that area, which is estimated at around 250,000 per workday. These commuters typically spend less than 15 minutes at the station, and are less likely to go shopping in the area.

Movement data allows retailers and restaurant owners to compare different locations, and decide which of these are most attractive in terms of potential footfall. Furthermore, city planners and public service managers use the data to see if a location needs more public infrastructure, such as transportation stops or parks. Contrary to street scanners or manual counters, which are limited to a fixed number of streets, movement data gives a comprehensive overview of all locations in Germany and abroad.

If we’d like to compare Alexanderplatz’s movement data to other locations, Targomo’s platform shows that another shopping hotspot in Berlin, the crossing of Kurfürstendamm and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, attracts 27,545 people per day on average between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm from Monday to Sunday. Munich’s central Karlsplatz, also known as Stachus, draws 33,499 people per day in that time frame.

In addition to population statistics and so-called street scanners or counters, which measure pedestrian traffic, movement data is an important indicator of potential footfall. The figures are based on people who have given permission on their devices (typically smartphones) to be tracked anonymously, and are in full compliance with Germany’s and Europe’s strict data and privacy protection laws. It is assumed that each device represents one person. In TargomoLOOP, the data is labeled as GPS-based population.

Movement figures are available for Germany, Austria and Switzerland for different time frames and days of the week, allowing a detailed overview of how many people stay at a certain location. Data for other countries is available upon request.

Movement data in TargomoLOOP allows businesses to see how popular their location is.
Location intelligence platform TargomoLOOP is able to visualize and calculate the catchment area on a map for different demographic and target groups, and takes transportation means into account. The green-colored area above shows how many people are within a 10-minute walking distance from Alexanderplatz and spend at least 15 minutes at the same location. Figures are daily averages measured from Monday through Sunday for the time interval 08:00 am to 08:00 pm.

Alexanderplatz’s reputation as a shopping destination becomes clear when looking at visitor numbers for Saturdays only: the number jumps to 51,917 for the time frame from 08:00 am to 8:00 pm (bottom figure in the table on the right-hand side).
